Southeast Alaska needs integrated air, land, and water transportation to reduce shipping costs, increase travelers’ access, and strengthen our economy. Effective and efficient transportation is the backbone of a robust regional economy.
The Lynn Canal Highway increases transportation efficiencies for northern SE Alaska communities through a hard surface roadway from Juneau to the North American continental road system. Benefits include lower-cost transportation, more sustainable ferry services elsewhere, and expanded recreational and economic development opportunities.
Southeast Alaska is maritime, given its 11,085 miles of tidal shoreline. The Alaska Marine Highway is an integral transportation link within the region. However, Southeast Alaska can no longer solely rely on an aging Alaska Marine Highway system for its transportation needs. It must evolve into a multifaceted transportation system.
